Shekhawati Region

PictureConverted haveli in Samode
Open Art Gallery of Rajasthan
Located north of Jaipur along an old camel caravan route are a series of small towns. In this semi-arid region are minor forts and some incredible havelis - mansions of wealthy merchants, mostly dating from the 1800's-1900's. Some of the havelis were open to visitors, giving us a chance to view the incredible murals painted on the exterior as well as the walls of the two inner courtyards. While some havelis have been converted to hotels, too many have fallen in disrepair or even stripped of their intricately carved windows, doorways.

Some murals featured the European innovations. The artist may have never even seen the car or train they were painting.
